What types of compressed gases can you transport by cargo aircraft?
We transport all IATA DGR Class 2 subcategories: Class 2.1 (flammable gases) — hydrogen, acetylene, propane; Class 2.2 (non-flammable, non-toxic gases) — nitrogen, argon, helium, carbon dioxide; and Class 2.3 (toxic gases) — chlorine, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide. Specialty and calibration gases (ultra-high purity, custom mixtures) are also transported in approved cylinders. Each subcategory has specific packaging and aircraft loading requirements that we manage end-to-end.
What cylinder and container standards apply to air freight of compressed gases?
Gas cylinders must be DOT or UN-certified pressure vessels, properly valve-protected (with caps or recessed valves), and within their hydrostatic test validity period. Cylinders must be loaded upright and secured to prevent movement during flight. Cryogenic liquefied gases (liquid nitrogen, liquid helium) travel in certified dewars or cryogenic containers with pressure relief devices. Our team verifies all cylinder certifications, valve integrity, and proper labeling before loading.
How do you prevent pressure issues with gas cylinders at altitude in a cargo aircraft?
Cargo aircraft cabins are pressurized but to a lower pressure equivalent than sea level (typically equivalent to 6,000-8,000 ft altitude). All gas cylinders we transport are rated for pressure differentials far exceeding flight conditions. Cryogenic containers are equipped with pressure relief valves that vent safely if internal pressure rises. We verify that cylinder fill pressures comply with IATA altitude compensation requirements and position cylinders in ventilated cargo areas as an additional safety measure.
