Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about our services
What IATA requirements must be met for live animal air transport?
All our animal shipments comply with IATA Live Animals Regulations (LAR). This includes using IATA-certified crates sized to the animal, proper ventilation openings, absorbent bedding, and food/water containers. Documentation includes a veterinary health certificate, CITES Appendix I or Appendix II permits for protected species, and import licenses for the destination country. For EU shipments, we process TRACES NT (Trade Control and Expert System) notifications; UK destinations require DEFRA clearance; US imports are coordinated with USDA-APHIS. All companion animals and identified livestock must carry an ISO 11784/11785 compliant microchip for traceability. Our team handles all regulatory compliance.
Can a veterinarian travel onboard during the flight?
Yes, we arrange onboard veterinary accompaniment for flights transporting horses, high-value animals, or any species requiring in-flight monitoring. The veterinarian monitors vital signs, manages hydration, and provides emergency medical care during the flight. Importantly, sedation is contraindicated during flight for horses and most large animals — it impairs their ability to balance in turbulence and increases the risk of injury. For multi-animal shipments, we coordinate with specialist equine or exotic animal veterinarians experienced in aviation transport.
How are horses transported by cargo aircraft?
Horses travel in jet stalls — purpose-built aeronautical containers. A standard configuration uses a 3-stall aeronautical box that holds three horses side by side with individual partitions. Each stall provides adequate space for the horse to balance, with non-slip flooring and padded walls. We maintain cabin temperature at 15-21°C with controlled ventilation. A qualified groom accompanies the horses at a ratio of 1 groom per 3 horses as an industry standard, monitoring stress levels, providing water, and adjusting hay nets. Horses must have a valid FEI passport for international competition transport, confirming vaccination status and identity.
What types of animals can you transport by air?
We transport competition and breeding horses (with valid FEI passports and studbook registration), domestic pets (dogs, cats — all ISO 11784/11785 microchipped), zoo animals involved in Species Survival Plan (SSP) or AZA/EAZA breeding programs, aquarium species, birds of prey, and livestock. For endangered species, we coordinate CITES Appendix I or Appendix II permits and work with studbook keepers and conservation bodies to ensure full traceability. Our fleet includes aircraft configured for jet stalls and 3-stall aeronautical boxes, as well as standard freighters adapted for crated animal transport. We do not transport animals for purposes that conflict with welfare regulations.
How much does it cost to fly a horse by cargo aircraft?
Equine air transport pricing depends on route, number of horses, and jet stall configuration. Typical ranges: Intra-European (e.g., Ireland to France): €8,000-€20,000 per horse. Transatlantic (Europe to USA/Middle East): €15,000-€40,000 per horse. Multi-horse charters (6-12 horses) reduce per-head costs by 30-50%. All prices include 3-stall aeronautical boxes, groom accommodation (at the standard 1 groom per 3 horses ratio), veterinary standby, and customs handling including TRACES NT processing.
