What determines the price of a flight to Tokyo

In Tokyo, the primary factor is distance. Most private flights arrive from Asia or cross the Pacific: the longer the range required for the aircraft, the more expensive the hourly flight cost. A hop to Seoul and a trans-Pacific journey from Los Angeles fall into different aircraft categories, and thus different budgets.

The second factor is access to Haneda. The city-center airport only allows business aviation through allocated slots: operators submit their requests around the 10th of the month for the following month, with responses around the 20th. During busy periods, a Haneda slot may be denied, in which case we switch to Narita, or plan well in advance. This constraint, more than the season, affects organization and price.

Finally, peak demand: cherry blossom season (late March-April), Golden Week (late April-early May), and the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka strain ground space and availability. Outside these periods, supply is ample at both airports.

Haneda or Narita: the real question in Tokyo

Tokyo has two international airports, and the choice is made before departure. Haneda (RJTT / HND) is about fifteen kilometers from the city center, a twenty to thirty-five minute drive, and operates 24/7: continuous customs, refueling, and ground handling, three runways up to 3,360 meters. It is the most convenient, but private jets are only admitted during specific slots, in limited numbers.

Narita (RJAA / NRT) is about sixty kilometers to the east, in Chiba Prefecture: a one to one and a half hour drive depending on traffic. In return, slots and parking are significantly less restricted, with a 4,000-meter runway for the largest aircraft. We aim for Haneda when a slot is available and the final destination is in the city; otherwise, we arrange arrival at Narita.
