Megève Altiport (LFHM / MVV) is a distinctive high-altitude airfield: a paved runway 434 meters long and 18 meters wide, with a 7% slope, perched at 1,472 meters above sea level, 5 kilometers southeast of the resort. Landing is only permitted on heading 153°, takeoff on heading 333°, always downhill, always by visual flight rules, and only during daylight hours.

The direct consequence: no jets can land there. The airfield is reserved for crews holding a mountain qualification (wheels or skis) or a specific site authorization for LFHM, using light propeller aircraft or helicopters. In addition, there’s a lesser-known operational rule: flights from non-Schengen countries are not permitted at the altiport. How Megève became Megève

Megève’s existence is no accident. In 1916, Baroness Noémie de Rothschild sought a place in France that could rival Saint-Moritz and chose this village in Haute-Savoie. The Hôtel du Mont d’Arbois opened in 1921 and immediately attracted royalty and the upper bourgeoisie. It was here that architect Henry-Jacques Le Même designed, as early as 1927, the first modern “winter sports chalet,” comfortable and open to the landscape, a model copied throughout the Alps ever since. In other words, the very idea of the chic ski resort was partly born in Megève.

The altiport extends this history. Inaugurated on December 20, 1964, it resulted from the meeting between Michel Ziegler, head of the Air Alpes company and builder of several alpine altiports of the time, and Jacques-Henri Bujard, a local from Megève close to the Rothschild family, who provided the land for Côte 2000. Landing on the heights of Megève is therefore not a recent feat invented for jet clientele: it is a local practice sixty years old.

This heritage changes the way one approaches a trip here. Megève is not a factory-resort located at the end of a ski lift. It is a village inhabited all year round, with its artisans, family homes, and restaurants.
