Heraklion is one of Greece’s busiest airports: over 10 million passengers in 2025, a record for Crete. Commercial flights take priority on the runway. A private jet therefore requires prior permission (a PPR) and a reserved arrival slot. In summer, this lead time and the price to bring the aircraft in follow demand.
The peak season is concentrated in July and August, with a maximum around August 15th, a Greek national holiday. The Cretan Diet Festival (July) and the Matala Beach Festival add to busier weekends.
Villas and suites in Elounda are booked 6 to 12 months in advance. Pressure on private jets therefore begins as early as June, with peaks in positioning flights to bring aircraft into place.
From November to March, the airport remains open 24/7. An arrival slot is generally obtained within 48 hours, and prices drop significantly. Winter in Crete remains sunny, without the summer crowds.

Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis is the city’s only gateway and Greece’s second-busiest airport by passenger numbers. The main runway, 09/27, is 2,714 m long by 45 m wide, at an elevation of 35 m, and is open 24 hours a day. A shorter runway, 12/30, 1,566 m, is used by light aircraft. Fuel is available on site. The largest aircraft are accepted: fire category 8, up to 350 tons.
Three companies serve private jets: Signature Aviation, Universal Aviation, and Proton Services. Each private flight requires airport approval, a PPR (Prior Permission Required). In July-August, allow 5 to 10 days. In summer, scheduled flights get priority for arrival slots.
Upon Your Arrival
The aircraft parks away from scheduled flights. A ground handling agent will meet you at the aircraft door and escort you to the private lounge. Customs and passport control are on site. The Palace of Knossos is 15 to 20 minutes away.
Elounda and the peninsula are 55 to 65 minutes away via the coastal road.
The GA lounge is on the dedicated apron, 4 km from Heraklion city center. Allow 10 to 15 minutes by car to reach Eleftherias Square and the old port, 15 to 20 minutes for the Palace of Knossos south of the city. For the Elounda peninsula and its resorts, the coastal national road is the only land option: 55 to 65 minutes depending on traffic. In July-August, morning arrivals avoid N90 congestion in the late afternoon.
By road, Elounda is 55 to 65 minutes away. By helicopter, the journey takes 20 to 25 minutes. Rotations can be organized from the LGIR tarmac to the Elounda peninsula, particularly useful during peak season when the N90 is congested. This option should be coordinated with your handler as soon as the flight is planned.

The chauffeur waits at the exit of the GA terminal, on the apron side. Heraklion city center and old port: 10 to 15 minutes. Palace of Knossos: 15 to 20 minutes. Elounda resorts (Blue Palace, Domes of Elounda): 55 to 70 minutes. Chania, to the west, is about 2 hours away via the highway. In July-August, the N90 eastbound can become congested after 5 PM: allow extra time.

Arrange this transferIn 2025, Heraklion exceeded 10 million passengers. From May to the end of October, PPR is the rule. Training flights are limited: a maximum of two at a time in the approach area, and only with air traffic control approval. A typical private flight is not affected by this limit.
Port cranes stand 700 to 1,200 m from the threshold of runway 27, up to 73 m above sea level. They can be moved with 30 minutes' notice. They are marked on approach charts. Under normal conditions, they do not close the runway.
Runway 12/30, 1,566 m, accommodates turboprops and very small jets. Medium and larger aircraft use 09/27. Until the end of October 2026, mid-runway takeoffs are no longer permitted on the main runway: the full 2,714 m must be used.

Compose my menuHeraklion Nikos Kazantzakis is physically constrained: the port and industrial areas block any extension to the east, urban fabric to the west, and the sea to the north. Capacity is capped. It is in this context that a new airport project, Kastelli (LGKC), is under construction southeast of Heraklion, in the Peza plain.
The project is designed to succeed LGIR with significantly higher capacity, a longer runway, and, according to published plans, a dedicated general and business aviation terminal.
As of the date of writing this page (September 2026), Kastelli is not yet open. No official inauguration date has been confirmed by the Hellenic authorities. Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis (LGIR/HER) therefore remains the sole operational airport for central Crete, with its three active FBOs.
For an operator planning regular rotations to Crete over several years, this project is worth monitoring: once Kastelli is operational, PPR procedures, accredited handlers, aeronautical coordinates, and distances to Elounda hotels will change. A private jet does not exempt you from formalities. At LGIR, passport control and customs are carried out in the GA terminal, separate from commercial traffic.

For any bizav flight to Heraklion, a PPR (Prior Permission Required) is mandatory. Your handler coordinates this with the airport before filing the flight plan, then requests the slot. During peak season (July-August), a lead time of 5 to 10 days before the flight is recommended to guarantee availability. In the off-season, 48 to 72 hours are generally sufficient. IFR and VFR training flights are subject to a separate procedure and cannot be scheduled during the busy summer period.
Yes, extended parking is possible subject to space availability on the GA apron. During peak season, LGIR’s apron is very busy, and the handler confirms availability at the time of booking. For multi-day stays in July-August, if parking at LGIR is not guaranteed for the duration, repositioning the aircraft to Chania (130 km to the west, 3,347m runway) can be an operational solution.
Elounda is 65 kilometers east of the airport, via the coastal national road. The journey takes 55 to 65 minutes by car, longer in July-August when the road gets congested in the late afternoon. A helicopter from the LGIR tarmac reaches the Elounda peninsula in 20 to 25 minutes. This option should be coordinated with your handler as soon as the flight is planned. For evening arrivals, a helicopter is the most reliable option during peak season.
Yes. The Palace of Knossos is about 8 kilometers southeast of the airport, a 15 to 20-minute drive. It is one of the few major archaeological sites in Europe that is so close to a GA terminal. Arriving by jet in the morning, being at Knossos at opening (8 AM, or 9 AM off-season), then heading to an Elounda resort for lunch by helicopter: this type of day is perfectly feasible from LGIR.
No. As of September 2026, the Kastelli project (LGKC) is under construction and has no confirmed official opening date. Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis (LGIR/HER) remains the sole operational airport for central Crete. For operators planning regular rotations over several years, Kastelli is a project to watch: when it opens, PPR procedures, accredited FBOs, and distances to Elounda will evolve.
