What Determines the Price of a Flight to Rhodes

In Rhodes, two main factors influence the price: the date and the lead time.

The season runs from April to October, with a peak in private jet activity in July and August. Friday evenings (arrivals) and Sunday evenings (departures) are booked first.

Every flight requires airport authorization before departure (a PPR, Prior Permission Required). A very short stopover, less than 90 minutes, is easier to obtain. During high season, allow 7 to 14 days to secure both an arrival time and a parking spot.

The aircraft can remain for the duration of your stay: there is no minimum duration imposed. Parking is free for up to 5 hours, then charged by the airport. Therefore, a positioning flight to move the aircraft elsewhere is not automatic: it depends on available spots at the time of booking, and the quote will specify this.

In July-August, the Meltemi (northwesterly wind, 15 to 30 knots) slightly increases the flight time and fuel consumption for flights arriving from the north or west. Conversely, it can slightly shorten flights in the other direction. This difference will be reflected in the quote, not on the day of departure.

In summer, British, Israeli, and Gulf clientele target the same weekends. The earlier the date is set, the more options remain for arrival times and parking availability.

Diagoras Airport by private jet, in practice

Diagoras is the only gateway to Rhodes. One runway, orientation 06/24, 3,306 m long, 5 m above sea level, open 24/7. A Category I ILS is installed on runway 24: this is a precision guidance system that helps with landing when the cloud ceiling is low. Both runway directions also have a GPS approach.

Each private flight must obtain airport approval, a PPR (Prior Permission Required), then a reserved arrival time, the slot. A very short stopover, less than 90 minutes, is easier to obtain. In July-August, allow 7 to 14 days. In 2019, the airport saw 5.5 million passengers, mostly charter flights: in summer, they take priority on the runway.

The GA lounge is directly accessible from the tarmac, 14 km from Rhodes Old Town. By taxi or private vehicle, allow 20 to 25 minutes to the gates of the medieval city, 10 minutes to Ialyssos, 30 minutes to Faliraki, and 50 to 55 minutes to Lindos. The narrow streets of the Old Town are pedestrianized: your driver will drop you at the nearest gate. In July-August, allow an additional 10 minutes during peak hours.

Symi (23 km) is the closest island destination without an airport: a fast boat from Mandraki takes about 50 minutes, a helicopter from LGRP apron less than 15 minutes. 3,306 m: a runway open to all categories

At 5 m altitude, the runway does not impose reductions due to heat or terrain. Common large jets (Gulfstream G550, Falcon 7X, Challenger 604, Global 6000) land there at normal load. The ILS on runway 24 helps in overcast weather. When the Meltemi blows from the northwest, landings naturally occur on runway 24, into the wind.

The Meltemi: a summer wind, not a closure

In July and August, this northwest wind often blows between 15 and 30 knots. It can slightly extend a flight arriving from the northwest. It does not close the airport: in July, more than 99% of the time allows for visual flight, 98% in August. Any fuel difference, if there is one, will be reflected in the quote.

Rhodes is a coordinated airport: you don't take off whenever you want. The airport validates the flight (the PPR), then blocks the slot. This is not something you need to do yourself. Friday evenings and Sunday evenings are booked first. A late request in August will find fewer available times.

Rhodes from April to October: windows that change flight organization

April, early May

Season opening, low pressure Hotels and nautical charter bases gradually reopen. Bizav traffic is still moderate, slots are available without extensive advance booking. 97% VFR conditions in April according to LGRP METAR historical data. Ideal for a first stay or reconnaissance: uncrowded island, pleasant weather.

June

Increasing demand, slots still fluid All beaches and gastronomic addresses are open. Commercial traffic is ramping up. For bizav, slots remain accessible 5 to 7 days in advance. The yachting season is settling in: Mandraki and the northern marinas are gradually filling up.

July, mid-August

Peak season, Meltemi wind Period of highest bizav demand. The Meltemi wind settles over the Aegean: 20 to 30 knots from the northwest, runway 24 becomes the preferred runway. VFR rates at 99% in July and 98% in August despite the wind. Friday evening and Sunday evening slots should be requested 10 to 14 days in advance via the handler.

August 15th

Dormition of the Virgin, island peak Greek national holiday. Massive influx from the mainland and neighboring islands. Accommodation and port berths to be coordinated well in advance. This is the night when the Old Town is the liveliest of the year. The week of August 15th generates the highest slot pressure of the entire summer.

September

Golden season, declining price pressure Water temperature at its maximum, bizav traffic significantly decreases after September 10th. Slots and parking become easy again. 99% VFR conditions. Hotel rates decline from mid-September, sea still perfect for yachting.

October

Gradual closure, end of yachting season Nautical charter bases are wrapping up their fleets. Bizav drops sharply from mid-October. The airport remains H24, slots without constraint. The Rhodes & South Aegean International Jazz Festival (October 22-25, 2026) marks the cultural close of the season. 97% VFR conditions in October.

DODECANESE

Diagoras, gateway to an otherwise inaccessible archipelago

In Rhodes, the aircraft lands at the threshold of an archipelago of over a hundred islands. The Dodecanese forms a string of inhabited lands stretching from the Anatolian coast to the Cretan Sea, most of which have neither an airport usable by jets nor direct connections from European capitals.

Rhodes is the only aerial entry point to this island network. Symi (23 km east), Halki (30 km west), Tilos (50 km), or Kastellorizo (120 km east, a tiny island a stone’s throw from the Turkish coast) have no air infrastructure for jets. The only way to access them from Europe in less than a day is to land at LGRP and take a boat or helicopter.

The medieval city of Rhodes adds to this stopover logic. The Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John, the ramparts of the upper city, and the Street of the Knights form one of the best-preserved medieval ensembles in the Mediterranean, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988. It is visible during the final approach to runway 24 with a northwest wind.

For a stay combining the city and the islands, the typical organization is as follows: jet to LGRP, the aircraft remains parked (free parking for the first 5 hours, then Fraport tariff), one or two nights in Rhodes, then a boat to Symi or Kos from Mandraki. The handler coordinates logistics from the tarmac, including helicopter rotations to islands not served by fast ferry.

Passport, customs, and flight rules in Rhodes

A private jet does not exempt you from formalities. At LGRP, passport control and customs are conducted in the GA lounge, separate from the commercial terminal.

Greece is in the Schengen Area: EU citizens travel with their ID card; others with a passport, and a visa if their nationality requires it.

Since October 12, 2025, the EES (Entry/Exit System) is gradually being deployed at the EU’s external borders: non-EU citizens should expect longer controls upon arrival and departure to non-Schengen countries.

How does PPR work at LGRP?

PPR (Prior Permission Required) is Fraport Greece’s authorization for apron access, mandatory for all bizav flights at LGRP. It is obtained via an HCAA-certified handler, who submits the request to Fraport Greece. For stopovers under 90 minutes, the procedure is streamlined. The airport is also coordinated: the slot is allocated by the HSCA (Hellenic Slot Coordination Authority) and must integrate the PPR. In high season, booking 7 to 14 days in advance is recommended.

Does the Meltemi wind really affect flights?

The Meltemi is the summer thermal wind of the Aegean, blowing from the northwest at 15 to 30 knots in July-August. At LGRP, it favors the use of runway 24 (almost headwind) and can slightly extend inbound flight times from the north and west depending on cruising altitudes. In no case does it prohibit operations: VFR condition rates exceed 99% in July and 98% in August at LGRP according to METAR historical data. The handler integrates it into fuel planning.

How to get to Symi from Rhodes Airport?

Symi (23 km) does not have an airport for jets. From LGRP, two options: a helicopter from the apron in less than 15 minutes, or a road transfer to Mandraki port (25 minutes from the airport), then a fast boat to Symi in about 50 minutes. The handler can coordinate the transfer from the tarmac to the pier. Kastellorizo, Halki, and Tilos can be reached in the same way, depending on distances.

What are the landing and parking fees at LGRP?

The landing fee is €6 excl. VAT per ton of Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW) for aircraft over 10 tons, according to the Fraport Greece tariff effective April 1, 2025. Parking is free for up to 5 hours; beyond that, fees are tiered according to duration and aircraft weight category.
