Second factor: the fashion calendar. The Pitti trade shows (Uomo, Bimbo, Filati) fill Florence twice a year, in January and June, for four days each. During these windows, slots at Peretola and the pool of available jets in Tuscany become highly constrained. A flight booked too late will be negotiated from a position of weakness.

Outside of Pitti, demand remains steady throughout the year: heritage tourism (Uffizi, Palazzo Pitti, Medici villas), gastronomic weekends in Chianti, business travel in fashion, leather, and luxury craftsmanship. There isn’t a high season as pronounced as by the sea, but no low season either.

Peretola, Amerigo Vespucci, is 5 km northwest of the city center: less than 15 minutes to the Arno. Proximity matters, not runway size.

One runway, 05/23, 1,560 m. The precision approach, a Category I ILS, is on heading 05, from the south. Landing facing north, heading 23, is practically forbidden for jets: only 977 m remain. The airport is therefore one-way for a jet. Turboprops and jets up to mid-size land here. Large aircraft and very long-haul flights go to Pisa or Bologna, then travel by road.

Peretola, Pisa, Bologna: three airports, one criterion

Florence is one of the few destinations in Europe where the choice of arrival airport depends primarily on the size of the aircraft, rather than the season or mood. This is not a drawback: it’s an operational reality to be understood from the very first conversation.

Peretola (LIRQ), 5 km from the center, accommodates anything that fits comfortably on its 1,560m runway: turboprops, very light jets, light jets, midsize. The Citation Latitude and Hawker 900XP, which cover most intra-European flights, land there without difficulty. The instrumental approach (ILS Category I) is available on heading 05. This is the airport that provides the most direct access to the historic center.

Pisa (LIRP), 80 km away, takes over for heavy jets and ultra-long-range aircraft arriving from the Gulf, Asia, or the Americas. Its runway exceeds 2,800m, the FBO is sized for these aircraft, and parking is ample. The Florence-Pisa road journey takes approximately one hour.

Bologna (LIPE), 100 km north, is the third option, relevant for transalpine flights from Germany, Switzerland, or Central Europe with a large group. It adds twenty minutes of extra travel time but offers the same aircraft size flexibility as Pisa.

A delayed flight may be accepted until 10:15 PM with prior notification from the operator. For a night schedule, you must either anticipate before the cut-off or switch to Pisa or Bologna, which offer more flexible operating hours.

When is it difficult to find a slot in Florence?

During the Pitti trade shows: Pitti Uomo in January (four days in mid-January) and in June (four days in mid-June), plus Pitti Bimbo and Pitti Filati during the same week in June.
