What Determines the Price of a Flight to Venice

In Venice, what changes the price is the lead time, not the runway. Marco Polo does not reserve an arrival time in the same way as large, saturated airports. However, it does require prior permission (a PPR): at least 2 hours in advance, and preferably 24 to 48 hours. During the Biennale Arte (May to November) or the Mostra del Cinema (early September), ground parking spaces fill up quickly, and the authorized duration drops below the usual 72 hours. The parking space is reserved at the same time as the flight, as soon as the dates are known.

Second point: fuel. For a non-commercial private flight, fuel can only be taken less than 4 hours before departure. For a charter flight, it can be taken upon arrival if the next leg remains within the European Union. This is not a significant extra cost, but it’s good to know before finalizing the schedule.

Third point: three seasons. Carnival (late January, early February) saturates the island and its access points. The Biennale lasts six months: the opening weeks and preview weekends are peak times. The Mostra, on the Lido, concentrates private arrivals over about ten very busy days in early September. Outside of these periods, Venice remains in demand all year round, with less advance notice required for arrival time and ground parking.

Venice Marco Polo (LIPZ / VCE) is on the edge of the lagoon, 13 kilometers from the central island, at 7 feet (2 meters): one of the international airports closest to sea level in Europe. Two parallel asphalt runways: 04R/22L, 3,302 meters long, with a Category I ILS, the precision guidance that allows landing in reduced visibility, and 04L/22R, 2,777 meters long. Both accept business jets, from very light to ultra-long-range.

The airport is open 24 hours a day, designated as an Airport of Entry (AOE) by the Italian authorities. The private terminal (FBO, Fixed Base Operator) operates from 0600 to 2200 local time; outside these hours, service is possible by prior request. The private dock for motorboats and water taxis is adjacent to the private terminal: you go from the plane to the water without passing through the commercial terminal.

Times when slots and parking are tight

In Venice, demand for private flights follows the city’s cultural calendar. These windows concentrate arrivals, saturate parking, and reduce authorized ground time: they require advance planning.

Late January, early February

Venice Carnival Carnival 2027 runs from January 23 to February 9. During these eighteen days, the island becomes saturated. Parking at Marco Polo is tight, and private motorboats are booked in advance: everything needs to be reserved several weeks ahead.

May to November (biennial)

Art Biennale, Giardini and Arsenale The 61st edition runs from May 9 to November 22, 2026. Opening weeks (preview early May) and national preview weekends concentrate private arrivals. Limited parking, PPR to be submitted as early as possible.

Early September

Mostra del Cinema (Venice Film Festival), Lido di Venezia The 83rd Film Festival was held from September 2 to 12, 2026, on the Lido. Demand explodes over ten days: jets, private motorboats, and shared motorboats are fully booked. Some operators prefer to land in Treviso (TSF) and transfer by road then water.

October to December

Relative low season The Art Biennale continues until November, but parking pressure decreases after September. This is the ideal window to discover Venice without saturation or the extra cost of early booking.

The Last Leg

Venice has no ground: why it's Europe's most unique arrival

Venice is built on over a hundred islets connected by 400 bridges and 170 canals. There are no roads to enter it: cars stop at Piazzale Roma, at the junction of the causeway and the island. The rest is done on foot or by water. This reality, which has given the city its unique character since the Middle Ages, radically transforms the private jet arrival experience.

What other cities offer as a luxury option, namely the private motorboat, is here the only way to reach your hotel from the tarmac. The GAT’s private pier is directly adjacent to the business aviation terminal: you go from plane to motorboat without taking a bus, without crossing a commercial terminal, without looking for a taxi. This logic is even more pronounced during the Mostra del Cinema: screenings, cocktails, and awards ceremonies are held on the Lido island, accessible only by water from Venice. The Lido airfield (LIPV) exists, but its 785-meter runway restricts it to small aircraft and helicopters. For the vast majority of private jets, the sequence remains Marco Polo, then motorboat to the Lido or the Festival Palazzo, a journey of about twenty minutes across the lagoon.
