An empty leg to Geneva,
if the sky lines up.

An empty leg to or from Geneva is a repositioning flight already on the schedule: the aircraft needs to reach another base or its next mission. These trips are offered at a reduced fare, often around 30% to 75% off a classic charter, in exchange for less flexibility on dates and routing.

On every enquiry, we systematically scan the sky for these opportunities. The goal: whenever possible, a more competitive quote, on price as well as on the aircraft category available.

Understanding the Price

What determines the price of a flight to Geneva

Geneva experiences two types of demand pressure. The first is structural: the financial center, watch manufacturers, and some 40 international organizations (UN, WTO, WHO…) generate sustained business aviation traffic throughout the year. This baseline traffic keeps availability tighter than elsewhere in Central Europe.

The second is seasonal. From December to March, Geneva becomes the natural gateway to the Alpine resorts, and slots become significantly constrained. Tarmac parking is capped at three hours without prior airport approval, and two hours during major events at Palexpo (Motor Show, international conferences). A flight during this peak period should be booked several weeks in advance.

Finally, night restrictions also impact costs. Business jet take-offs are subject to noise quotas after 10 PM, with a complete departure curfew between midnight and 6 AM. An itinerary that falls outside this window must be planned upon request and may affect the quote if the aircraft needs to comply with the quota regime.

AIRPORT & PRIVATE SERVICES

Geneva Cointrin by private jet, in practice

Geneva Cointrin (LSGG / GVA) is approximately 4 km from the city center, in Meyrin. The single concrete runway 04/22 is 3,900 meters long, at 430 meters (1,411 ft) altitude: a large jet can depart without useful distance limitations. TAG Aviation (Flight Centre, often among Europe’s best private terminals) and Jet Aviation (on-site since 1969, IS-BAH Stage 2 certified, three lounges, maintenance up to B747) provide ground handling. Signature Flight Support also operates here. International customs are available on-site for flights outside the Schengen area.

During Palexpo events (Motor Show, trade fairs), parking is limited to two hours, and the aircraft may need to be relocated: this is planned at the time of booking.

You land. Everything is already in place.

Upon your arrival

The driver waits at the aircraft, not in the commercial terminal. For flights outside the Schengen area, passport control and customs are done on-site: Switzerland is not in the EU, but it is in the Schengen area. The city center is 10-15 minutes away depending on traffic.

The international organizations district (Palais des Nations, WHO, WTO) is about ten minutes away. A helicopter to ski resorts can depart from Cointrin heliport at your actual landing time.

Technical specifics for Geneva
Your PJC broker handles everything

Restricted departures from 9:26 PM

After 10 PM, noise quotas regulate take-offs. Business jet departures are restricted from 9:26 PM local time. No departures from midnight to 6:00 AM, no arrivals from midnight to 5:00 AM. Between 10 PM and midnight, a commercial flight requires operator approval. In winter and during major events, slots should be requested early and are confirmed with the quote.

Exit to France via Ferney-Voltaire

Part of the airport is in France, accessible via the customs road from Ferney-Voltaire. This French sector serves domestic French commercial flights. For an international private jet, customs and parking are entirely on the Swiss side, in the private terminals. To leave the airport directly into France, the driver uses this customs route.

Geneva to the rhythm of major events

January
World Economic Forum in Davos The WEF in Davos (100 km northeast) annually gathers heads of state, CEOs, and investors. Jets converge on Zurich, Sion, and Geneva. GVA sees its slots and parking tighten several days before and after the event.
December-March
Alpine ski season Verbier, Zermatt, Crans-Montana, Courchevel on the French side: this is the absolute high season for Geneva business aviation. Slots must be booked several weeks in advance, parking is capped, and aircraft repositioning is often necessary at the end of the stay.
March-April
Watches & Wonders The world's largest watch fair at Palexpo in Geneva. Manufacturers (Rolex, Patek Philippe, Cartier, Vacheron Constantin) invite buyers and international press. A peak in business aviation traffic concentrated over five to six days, to be treated as a major event in terms of slots and parking.
May
World Health Assembly The WHO's WHA brings together over 190 member states at the Palais des Nations. Government delegations and representatives of non-governmental organizations arrive en masse by official jets and charters. A brief but intense surge in slot demand.
November
International Motor Show The GIMS at Palexpo attracts manufacturers, partners, and global press. Another strain on slots and parking, similar to the January peak, to be anticipated with the same level of notice.
The Geneva Hub

Why Geneva attracts so much business aviation traffic

Geneva is home to the European headquarters of the UN and over 40 international organizations, including the WHO, WTO, ICRC, and UNHCR. This diplomatic fabric generates a constant flow of delegations and officials traveling by charter or private jet, irrespective of seasonality. This background traffic is not highly visible in public statistics but is very present on FBO tarmacs.

In addition, there is a high concentration of watch manufacturers in neighboring cantons (Vaud, Fribourg, Jura). The headquarters of Rolex, Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, and major Cartier houses are located within a 50-kilometer radius of the airport. Their executives and key clients (collectors, major distributors, brand ambassadors) arrive by private jet for discreet meetings that do not involve any commercial stops.

Finally, the financial center (private banks, independent wealth managers, alternative funds) maintains sustained commuter traffic between Geneva, London, Zurich, and Gulf financial centers. This regular and repetitive movement is why GVA remains one of the busiest business aviation airports in Central Europe, even outside any seasonal peak.

Formalities and safety

Formalities, safety and private flight regulations in Switzerland

Private jet travelers to Switzerland must check requirements with the national civil aviation authority for flight permissions, overflights, and landings. Border formalities, visas, and customs vary by nationality, origin country, itinerary, and aircraft operation type. Always consult official sources for tailored advice.

Iconic Activities and Geneva Luxury

Geneva abounds with activities to satisfy the most refined tastes. The Jet d’Eau, the city’s emblem, offers a majestic spectacle on Lake Geneva.

Watch enthusiasts will be delighted to visit the Patek Philippe Museum or stroll along Rue du Rhône, a temple of luxury and major brands. The old town, with its cobbled streets and Saint-Pierre Cathedral, invites historical discovery.

For a touch of greenery, the English Garden and its Flower Clock are must-sees. The surroundings of Geneva also offer unique opportunities, such as a cruise on the lake or an excursion into the vineyards.

For these journeys, Private Jets Connect can also arrange helicopter, limousine, or even yacht transfers, for a complete and seamless travel experience.

To book a private jet to or from Geneva, simply contact Private Jets Connect. Our experts are available 24/7 to help organize your tailored flight. We take into account your preferences, passenger count, preferred aircraft type and schedule to propose the best option — comfort, flexibility and discretion included.

03

Are night take-offs and arrivals possible from Geneva?

Partially. The airport is open permanently, but business jets cannot take off between midnight and 6 AM (departure curfew), nor land between midnight and 5 AM. Between 10 PM and midnight, take-offs are subject to Geneva Airport’s noise quota system: the aircraft must belong to acoustic classes IV or V according to Swiss regulations, and the operation is deducted from the available quota. A late departure or early morning arrival must be planned upon booking to avoid any on-site blockage.

04

During ski season, should slots be booked far in advance?

Yes, and much earlier than for a standard business flight. From December to March, Geneva is saturated with flights to Alpine resorts, and tarmac parking is capped at three hours without prior airport approval, or two hours during major events. On high-season weekends, available slots can be exhausted several weeks in advance. We check availability upon the first request and anticipate aircraft repositioning if the stay exceeds the parking limit.

05

What is the French Sector of the airport, and does it change anything for a private flight?

The French Sector is a part of the airport physically on French territory, accessible only via the Ferney-Voltaire customs road. It is primarily used for domestic commercial flights between France and Geneva. For an international private jet flight, handling, customs, and parking are entirely on the Swiss side, at the FBOs (TAG Aviation, Jet Aviation, Signature). In practice, the French Sector does not change anything for your private jet arrival or departure, but it can serve as a direct exit on the French side if your chauffeur is waiting for you there, coming from Pays de Gex or Ain.

06

Which aircraft can land in Geneva, are ultra-long-range jets possible?

Runway 04/22 is 3,900 meters long: all business aircraft operate there, from turboprops to ultra-long-range jets (Global 7500, Gulfstream G700, Falcon 10X). These large aircraft are regularly present at Cointrin, reflecting the clientele level of Geneva. The constraint is not runway length, but rather time slots and parking space, especially during periods of high demand.

07

How long does it take to reach the city center from the tarmac?

Your chauffeur will pick you up at the aircraft, on the FBO side, away from the commercial terminal. Geneva city center (Rive, Cornavin) is 10-15 minutes away depending on traffic. The international organizations district (Palais des Nations, Route de Pregny) is about ten minutes away. Major lakeside hotels (Quai du Mont-Blanc, Quai Wilson) are a fifteen-minute drive. For ski resorts, a helicopter from Cointrin heliport reduces Verbier to approximately 25-30 minutes.

08

Can one travel with a pet or arrange medical transport from Geneva?

Both are possible. A domestic pet travels in the cabin, declared upon booking with its European passport, microchip, and up-to-date rabies vaccination. For flights outside the European Union, the destination country’s requirements apply (health certificates, potential quarantine periods): we check each point during the quote process. For medical repatriation or urgent medical transport, Geneva is a very well-served departure point: several specialized operators based at GVA have medically equipped aircraft with medical teams on board.
