Saanen is a private, uncontrolled airfield, 2.8 km northwest of Gstaad. Flights are conducted under visual flight rules (VFR) and during daylight hours only. Runway 08/26 measures 1,466 m on the ground. After displaced thresholds, approximately 1,050 m remain for landing on runway 26, and 1,070 m on runway 08. The elevation is 1,008 m (3,307 feet). At 25 °C, the air density perceived by the aircraft can exceed 5,600 feet.

Turboprops and light jets can land here, following a performance analysis. There is no PAPI (Precision Approach Path Indicator) to guide the descent. The traffic pattern is non-standard due to the terrain. There are no instrument approaches. Heavier aircraft use Bern-Belp, 60 km away, or Geneva, 130 km away. In winter, landings are only permitted during daylight hours, until the end of civil twilight. A flight outside the Schengen Area requires 48 hours’ notice.

Runway 26 is the most used, with westerly winds. At 1,008 m, the maximum load reduces margins, especially in summer. An analysis is mandatory for turboprops, high-performance aircraft, or jets. It accompanies the PPR request, which is the airfield's approval.

If the valley is obscured, landing is not possible

The approach to runway 26 is prepared at around 4,500 feet, near the Palace Hotel, following the terrain's slope. If visibility drops, if clouds descend into the valley, or if night approaches, Saanen is no longer an option. Bern or Geneva are included in the quote from the start.

Approval, and days when the village closes the sky

Each flight, both arriving and departing, requires a PPR (Prior Permission Required) via the airfield's portal. A minimum of 2 hours 30 minutes for a Schengen flight, 48 hours for non-Schengen. Occasional closures occur for funeral ceremonies in Saanen. Dates are posted on the portal's board. In July-August, gliders are numerous and may restrict operating hours.
