Two limits matter for the trip. The wingspan, from wingtip to wingtip, must not exceed 95 feet (29 m): a very large jet, G650 or Global 7500, cannot come here. It lands at Eagle County, 40 km to the north, and a car finishes the journey. The airport closes from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. A late dinner does not end with a night takeoff.

If the weather closes in, the plane goes to Eagle County or Denver. This is known before departure, not when you are about to get off the plane.

In summer, the air is thinner

At this altitude, a hot afternoon can make the aircraft "feel" like it's at over 11,000 feet. It will then carry fewer passengers, luggage, or fuel. Any difference, if there is one, is included in the quote.

Airport Regulations

The 95-Foot Rule and KASE's Planned Evolution

In 1999, the FAA approved a modification to standard regulations for KASE: the separation between the runway and the taxiway is less than the nationally required 400 feet. In return, Pitkin County committed to prohibiting any aircraft exceeding 95 feet in wingspan. This rule, enshrined in the Pitkin County Code, has been enforced without exception for 25 years.

It excludes the largest ultra-long-range aircraft (Gulfstream G650 at 99 ft, Global 7500 at 104 ft) but allows the majority of business jets to operate: Challenger 650 (69 ft), Falcon 8X (87 ft), Gulfstream G550 (93 ft), Global 5500 (94 ft). The 2,440 m runway is suitable for these aircraft, provided a performance analysis is conducted at the 7,838 ft altitude.

Around 2027, Pitkin County plans a runway reconstruction with an expansion of the safety area. If the project is completed, the runway/taxiway separation will meet the standard 400-foot norm, and the wingspan limit will increase to 118 feet or less. The list of aircraft authorized at KASE will significantly expand. For now, the 95 ft rule remains in effect until the work is completed.
