Live Empty Legs Los Angeles — the West Coast window

Los Angeles is North America’s second-largest business jet market after New York, and Van Nuys (KVNY) is the world’s leading general aviation airport by movements. Studios, family offices, professional sports, and the tech industry fuel an uninterrupted flow of repositioning flights to the East Coast, Las Vegas, Aspen, Cabo, and the Bay Area — offering numerous opportunities if your dates remain flexible.

Van Nuys (KVNY) is the world's most active general aviation airport, with over 220,000 movements per year, the majority of which are business jets. Located in the San Fernando Valley, 20 minutes from Beverly Hills and the studios, it concentrates most of the ecosystem: six major FBOs (Signature, Castle & Cooke, Clay Lacy, Jet Aviation, Atlantic, Western Jet Aviation), dedicated Heavy and Long Range tarmacs, and direct access to the 405 and 101 freeways. Burbank (KBUR) serves Hollywood and the studios…

"Found an empty leg from Van Nuys to Teterboro on a Tuesday evening on a Heavy jet for a trip the next day. Saved over $25,000 compared to our usual charter, same Challenger 605 aircraft, same quality operator. The marketplace has become our primary channel for bi-coastal rotations."

"On the VNY-Bay Area route, I almost always find an empty leg on a Light Jet for between $5,000 and $7,000 for trips I used to pay $12,000 for on a classic charter. The seamless boarding at Castle & Cooke and the booking app make the experience superior to a commercial business flight."

"First empty leg experience for a trip from Burbank to Cabo San Lucas in November. Received a WhatsApp alert at 9 am for a Mid Size departing at 2 pm. Boarding at BUR in 15 minutes, perfect crew, direct flight to SJD. For my next shoots, it has become a default option."

"During ski season, I find an empty leg from Van Nuys or Burbank to Aspen almost every week on Thursday or Friday evening, and a return on Sunday. Impeccable service, quality partner operators, transparent pricing. My annual cost has dropped by 40% since I started using the marketplace."

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about empty-leg flights in Los Angeles

The key points to know before booking an empty leg from or to Los Angeles.

01

Why is Los Angeles a major market for empty legs?

Los Angeles is the second-largest business jet market in North America after New York. Van Nuys (KVNY), located in the San Fernando Valley 20 minutes from Beverly Hills, is the world’s leading general aviation airport by movements (over 220,000 per year). In addition, there are Burbank, Santa Monica, Orange County, Hawthorne, and LAX — an ecosystem of 6 hubs within 45 minutes of Beverly Hills. This density creates an uninterrupted flow of repositioning flights to the East Coast, Las Vegas, Aspen, the Bay Area, and Mexico.

02

Which Los Angeles airports are involved?

Our marketplace aggregates flights at the region’s business jet hubs: primarily Van Nuys (KVNY) (the historic Valley hub), Burbank (KBUR) for studios and Hollywood, Santa Monica (KSMO) as a coastal alternative (scheduled for closure at the end of 2028 but still operational), John Wayne / Orange County (KSNA) for Newport Beach, Hawthorne (KHHR) for tech, and LAX (KLAX) for intercontinental long-haul flights. Depending on your departure point and destination, one of these six airports will be more relevant than another.

03

What are the most active empty leg corridors from Los Angeles?

Four main axes dominate. Transcontinental Coast-to-Coast (VNY ↔ Teterboro, Westchester, Boca Raton) on Heavy or Long Range aircraft, approximately 5 hours of flight — the flagship route for family offices and bi-coastal companies. VNY ↔ Las Vegas (LAS) on Light/Mid Size, the busiest business jet rotation in the United States with several hundred movements per week. VNY ↔ Cabo San Lucas (SJD) on Mid Size, year-round with a peak from December to March. VNY ↔ Aspen (ASE) from December to March (ski season). In addition, there are daily rotations to the Bay Area (SFO, OAK, SJC) on Light Jets.

04

How much does an empty leg from Los Angeles cost?

Prices vary depending on the aircraft type, distance, and flexibility. As an indication: VNY → Las Vegas from $4,500 on Light/Mid Size, VNY → New York (TEB) from $22,000 on Heavy, VNY → Cabo San Lucas from $12,000 on Mid Size, VNY → Aspen from $14,000 during ski season, VNY → San Francisco from $5,000 on Light Jet, VNY → Hawaii (HNL) from $35,000 on Long Range. This represents a saving of 50 to 75% compared to on-demand charter, with identical aircraft and crew.

05

What is the high season for empty legs in Los Angeles?

The Californian market does not experience a structural lull — flows are constant due to the climate and diversity of industries (film, tech, sports, fashion). However, peaks are concentrated in four windows: January-March for awards season (Golden Globes, SAG, Oscars) with a significant East-West Coast influx, April-June with Coachella and Stagecoach (VNY ↔ Palm Springs and VNY ↔ NYC/Miami rotations for talent and guests), June-August for festivals and tours, and December-March for Aspen and Cabo (seasonal getaways).

06

Are there transpacific empty legs from Los Angeles?

Yes, but they are rare and operated on Long Range and Ultra Long Range aircraft (Global 7500, Falcon 8X, Gulfstream G650/G700/G700ER). The LAX/VNY ↔ Honolulu (HNL) routes are the most frequent, followed by LAX ↔ Tokyo (RJTT/RJAA) and LAX ↔ Sydney. Given the flight time and hourly cost, these empty legs offer the highest absolute discounts: $50,000 to $100,000 in savings on a Hawaii or transpacific flight compared to a classic charter.

07

Can an empty leg be canceled?

Yes. An empty-leg flight depends on the primary flight that generates the repositioning. If this primary flight is canceled, modified, or its schedule changes (weather, mechanical issues, client change), the empty leg disappears or is rescheduled. This is particularly true on transcontinental and transpacific corridors (weather, jet streams) and during the Aspen ski season (mountain corridors). We recommend confirming quickly and having a backup option.

08

Is the on-board service identical to a classic charter?

Yes: identical aircraft, FAA Part 135 certified crew, private terminal (FBO) with VIP parking, direct boarding from the tarmac without a commercial terminal, and on-board services (catering, newspapers, high-speed Ka/Ku WiFi). The reduced price does not degrade anything — you are simply purchasing a trip that is already planned and paid for by the primary flight generating the repositioning.

09

How many people can travel on an empty leg Los Angeles?

Capacity depends on the aircraft assigned to the rotation. On Bay Area and Las Vegas rotations, you’ll mostly find Light Jets (Citation CJ3+, Phenom 300 — 6 seats) and Mid Size (Citation XLS+, Hawker 900XP — 8 seats). On Aspen, Cabo, and transcontinental routes, Super Mid (Challenger 350, Citation Sovereign — 9 seats) and Heavy (Falcon 2000, Challenger 605, Gulfstream G280 — 10 to 12 seats). On transpacific flights, Long Range (Global 6000/7500, Falcon 7X/8X, Gulfstream G650 — 12 to 16 seats in a wide cabin).

10

How can I be notified of an empty leg Los Angeles as soon as it's published?

Activate a WhatsApp alert: indicate your route (VNY → New York, VNY → Las Vegas, VNY → Aspen, VNY → Cabo, etc.) and your dates, and you’ll receive a notification as soon as a flight matches. This service is free, with no obligation to book, and it’s the fastest channel to not miss short-notice opportunities — particularly valuable on saturated corridors (Coast-to-Coast during awards season, Aspen between Christmas and New Year’s, Las Vegas every weekend).
